Summer Term 1975

21/4: Back to school
22/4: First day at school of my last term. Have moved down one place in form. Have game of cricket. Go wicket keeper.
23/4: Move the sweet cupboard from the sweet cupboard to the second-hand room. Get no sweets. Have cricket. Feeling really bad.
24/4: One of the best days this term. Do clay pigeon shooting. Get 4 out of 10, best ever. Read in chapel. Have general knowledge quiz.
25/4: Have Latin prep and double science in evening. Go out and catch things in pods. Wicket keeper in cricket.
26/4: Do not get sweets, as was promised. Mr Broadbent goes up to London. Get letter from Jersey.
27/4: Hot weather. Have to read in chapel. Have a boring half holiday. Get bloody cross with Wainwright.

28/4: Have been back a week already.Play cards with Sawyer. Have great fun in dorm playing stupid games.
29/4: Very overcast and dull day. Time is going very well. Get 6 runs in cricket.
30/4: Have my music lesson - do very well. Rains a bit, but pretty good, hot weather otherwise. PM Have great half hole.
1/5: In shotgun shooting I got 3 out of 10 clays. No extras. E P was maths. 2nd Thursday.
2/5: It was discovered that someone had drawn a disgusting picture in the East Corridor. No-one owns up.
3/5: The whole school was kept in because of this drawing. We had to read in our formrooms. get to sleep quite early.
4/4: We were let off our punishments as all the day boys were away. Had good fun in the morning. Read at King's Somborne church.

5/4: Another boring week starts. Play cricket. Tomorrow mr ffaulkes goes.
6/4: Versailles boys go, lucky swine. Been back two weeks.
7/4: It seems that the 3rd May case has been closed. We were allowed sweets and half-holiday.
8/4: Do clay pigeon shooting. get 3 out of 10. Same as last week. Average this term: 1 in 3.
9/4: Do double biology. Bore. rains. No games. But go for a boring walk.
10/4: Go out. First exeat.
11/4: Only 8 people left. 10p sweets. Nicola and I have great fun with Tracy.

12/4: Second to last monday before Scholarship. Have 2 maths, 2 french, 2 germans.
13/4: No maths. Windy day. Have cricket for match tomorrow.
14/4: Match away versus Cathedral. Draw. I took the first wicket of the match at slip.
15/4: Shotgun shooting. Do better. get 4 out of 10. Not long until scholarship.
16/4: Dad's birthday. Dad got a calculator. Very windy day. Not very nice weather, a bit of rain.
17/4: It rained hard all day. The home match was cancelled. Not long until scholarship. Do not get letter.
18/4: Summer seems to have arrived. Beautiful day. Some people swim but I did not.

19/4: Beautiful day. First official swim. Played bad game of cricket. Go slip. Last Monday before scholarship.
20/4: Last tuesday before scholarship. Do two E.P.s. Play cricket. Swim. very cold indeed, and it hurt your legs.
21/4: Go to dentist with Dad in half-hol. EGB was not here so I did sweets. Buy Shooting magazine. Swim.
22/4: Shotgun shooting. Get 7 out of 10 (6+1). Not long until scholarship.
23/4: Two E.P.s - last ones before scholarship. Trial for 1st XI match.
24/4: Three days to go. Have great half hole. Match draw. Take first catch.
25/4: Last day. Have 8p sweets. Go with Jeff and Nicola.

26/4 - 1/6: Scholarship at Bradfield.

2/6: Get my results. I did not get anything. Everyone was very sympathetic. First day back for a week.
3/6: No maths. CE trials. Just over one week till half term. Go into sick bay (fake). Get grades: two ABs.
4/6: 1st XI versus Pilgrims. Dad comes and brings camera and tape 'Fog on the Tyne'.
5/6: The Referendum. So far it looks like 'yes'. Get the school record in shooting. 13 (12 + 1) ex 10.
6/6: Sixth Form go to see Corealanus at bradfield. See Douglas. Have great fun in coach.
7/6:
8/6: Have two swims but not one in the morning.

9/6: Only a week until half term. Not enjoying it here any more.
10/6: Best day for lessons again. A week's time and half term will have come and gone.
11/6: Match versus Chafyn Grove. Draw. Mum comes. Get two runs.
12/6 - 16/6 Half term

16/6: Back to school
17/7: No maths. Have a cricket practice for away match. Find I have left swimming trunks at home.
18/6: Phone up Dad to tell him about swimming trunks. Away match at Twyford. Get five runs. Match drawn.
19/6: Miss shooting because of choir pratice for Milton Abbey.
20/6: Go to Milton Abbey to song (RSCM). Mum comes in minibus. Sing on the way back.
21/6: Match v Stroud away. Get 5 runs, out lbw. They got 203, we got 37. get team swim.
22/6: Mr Woods takes 5 prefects + Taylor for a walk but also some juniors. Paddle in Test. Very hot. Peel for the first time ever.

23/6: EXAMS!!!! Doing St Edward's Scholarship with Taylor, Sawyer, Easton. Not too bad.
24/6: Miss music lesson because of exams. Have Latin. Not too bad. No results yet.
25/6: Last two exams. Have match against Farleigh House home. Out third ball. Mum does not come and it was a draw.
26/6: Have shooting. get 6+1 out of 10. Get large bruise on my shoulder. Swim.
27/6: Bruise goes nice and yellow. Swimming is cold. Only two more Fridays.
28/6: Get blown up by Mr Broadbent.
29/6: Go out. Do a bit of shooting. Dad had to sit down because of his veins.

30/6: Boring day. One of the only days when we have seven lessons this week.
1/7: Upper Sixth to Southampton Art Gallery. Get lent money. But sweets. Mr Broadbent gets cross.
2/7: Get sweets and home U-11 match. Win. Mum does not come.
3/7: Miss shooting because of match v Marlborough. Lose. get 8 runs - highest score ever in match. Mum comes.
4/7: Music exams. Do not do too well. Have a half hol. Some boys go to opera. Swimming match. Shoot in evening. Get 1 ex 10. BAD.
5/7: Fathers match. Miss Latin anyway, but Wainwright and I miss 2nd-to-last lesson because of helping Dick. In shooting get 3 out of 10, Dad 1. Lose Fathers day match. out 3rd ball.
6/7: Last Exeat. Marsh Court is open to the public. Look at cars. About 600 people come.

7/7: Only 10 days to go. Wake up to horrible lessons. Have league practice. I have got a bad league.
8/7: Practice for tomorrow. Do English project. Only one more Tuesday. Not one of the best days.
9/7: Athletics match at Twyford. Win whole thing. M.C. wins: S100, S200, L-Jump, S and J hurdles, S relay (which had to be run twice). Mum comes. Have team sweets and swim after supper.
10/7: Wainwright goes to Wellington. Do shooting. Get 6 ex 12. Dick shows us round his house as it was last shoot. Have a lecture by an Old Boy on Marine Biology. Do '3 cheers'.
11/7: I don;t know if I will come to Old Boys' Day. Leagues.
12/7: Last Saturday. Have a talk with Welbroke-Smith
13/7: Rain. Last sweets. Trunks out. Half hole. Feeling happy.

14/7: We are doing pretty well in Leagues.
15/7: Last normal day. Pack. It looks like we will win Leagues.
16/7: Come 2nd in Leagues. Have no sweets. Rounders match and barbeque.
17/7: Break up. Glad to be rid of people and Marsh Court.

  1. My ears should be 'burning';post 1972, however! I was fascinated by both day to day records and social commentary which had me chuckling with wry amusement."The Child is father of the man", (Wm. Wordsworth, one of Mary Wright's favourite poets); the incisiveness and, to some, lacerating wit (quality stuff except where blatantly emotive).I still shudder on recall of Marsh Court but you (with some exceptions) were a "great" bunch; you (the author, R Taylor, RG Wainwright, Twm Morys (Morris), CW Gilchrist, R White, C Wallace, Brown, et al. Boys can be v. conservative; I reprobated this 'surname only' tradition (I suspect George ffoulkes, that wonderful polymath agreed).The last MC ex-pupil I spoke to was Andrew Chalkley (who aslso agreed). Charles; you were not the only one to keep a diary but yours, I bet, reigns supreme.
